Does the Coating Color Affect Heat Reflection and Energy Efficiency?

Oct 15, 2025 Leave a message

For manufacturers of ACP panels, sandwich panels, and metal roofing systems, choosing the right pre-painted aluminum coil directly affects the thermal performance, durability, and market competitiveness of their final products.
A well-designed heat-reflective pre-painted aluminum coil can significantly reduce surface temperature, improve insulation, and lower building energy costs, making it one of the most effective materials for modern energy-efficient construction.

How Coating Color Influences Heat Reflection

Solar radiation consists of ultraviolet (5%), visible light (43%), and infrared energy (52%).
The visible light defines the coating's color, while infrared radiation determines how much heat the surface absorbs.
A pre-painted aluminum coil with high infrared reflectivity absorbs less heat, keeping the metal panel cooler under the same sunlight.

Ordinary dark PVDF coatings typically have a Total Solar Reflectance (TSR) between 0.30–0.45, while a heat-reflective coated aluminum coil using infrared-reflective pigments can reach 0.85–0.95, reducing surface temperature by 15–25°C.

Advanced Coating System for Heat-Reflective Aluminum Coils

Our heat-reflective pre-painted aluminum coils are manufactured using a multi-layer coating system specially developed for aluminum-magnesium-manganese coils and other architectural panels.

The coating system includes:

Weather-resistant resin

ensures long-term gloss and UV resistance

Infrared-reflective inorganic pigments

ultrafine plate-shaped pigments that reflect infrared energy while maintaining natural color tone

Functional additives

enhance coating adhesion, gloss stability, and surface hardness

According to SGS laboratory testing (2024), a heat-reflective aluminum coil surface remained 21.7°C cooler than a conventional coated aluminum sheet under the same 1000 W/m² solar intensity.

Proven Performance in Real Projects

In a food manufacturing plant in Southeast Asia, the customer replaced traditional dark roofing sheets with our heat-reflective coated aluminum coils.
After installation, indoor temperature dropped by 6–8°C, while annual energy consumption decreased by 12.3%.
Even after ten years of outdoor exposure, gloss retention remained above 85%, proving the coating's excellent stability.
